Realizing your old

It’s a hard time in life to realize you are old. The first sign is your body. Things hurt in places that you think what the, hey. The second sign is denial. You know what is happening but refuse to believe it. And finally, there is the number of years your birthday celebrates. My last was 55. Just a couple more, and I am officially a senior citizen.

Now even the realization of it doesn’t make your brain accept it. You continue to think you can do what you did in your thirties. Or that you can still attract them pretty young things. And in today’s way of meeting makes you an immediate target for scammers.

Your other part of denial. Thinking that the pretty woman on the profile you are chatting with is the person you are actually talking to. The only way to know is through video chat. And in my experience, there will be an excuse why that is not possible. And they throw the word trust in a lot.

They are pretty good at manipulation, but not perfect. I have learned a few things about them. First is they won’t call or video chat. Will use every excuse not to. If forced, they will, and create a problem while making that call. Another thing to check is the profile photo. Put it through a reverse image app. They love using pics of porn stars.

Being an old guy, you are susceptible to the rhetoric. Loneliness and vulnerability are the perfect target. Being gullible is also what they look for. And all this is so very obvious to them because you're old.

People, especially young people, treat older folks like they are an outside animal. I have witnessed young folks just lay into older folks like it's never going to happen to them. A friend once told me that “age and treachery will always overcome youth and ambition” I liked that saying, and has proved true more times than not.

It has also been drawn to my attention the as you age you get more knowledge and experience, but your value seems to depreciate. A lot of companies I have worked for over the years seem to watch for people close to retirement and find a stupid little reason to fire them knowing there is a clause in their contract saying if said employee gets fired, they are not entitled to company retirement benefits. I can name two companies I personally saw this happen at.

So, in conclusion to my editorial, getting old bites.

Thanks for reading. Sincerely James W. Sims IV.
